Almost everything written about mouse jigglers assumes a tracker that scores you: a percentage per ten-minute block, screenshots on a timer, a dashboard where a manager reads both. Toggl Track is not that tool, and it says so in public — its own site states an anti-surveillance policy of no screenshots and no camera tracking. That single fact changes the question. If nothing is scoring your input, there is no score for a jiggler to move.

They answer it with an activity percentage derived from input, with screenshots taken on a schedule, and with reports that flag intervals nobody had to ask about.

Toggl Track is built to answer a different question: where did the hours go. It is a timesheet with a stopwatch, aimed at agencies and freelancers who bill clients, and its published position on monitoring is not neutral — the company advertises the absence of screenshots as a feature rather than treating it as a gap.

This matters for anyone arriving here from a search that lumped the two together. The advice that makes sense for a monitoring tool does not transfer, and following it here mostly means solving a problem you do not have.

What idle detection in Toggl actually does

The desktop app watches for inactivity, and when it finds it the documented behaviour is a prompt: you are asked to discard or adjust the idle time. The purpose is timesheet accuracy — a timer left running through lunch produces an hour you did not work, and the dialog exists so you do not have to correct it afterwards from memory.

Read that sentence carefully, because the whole article turns on it. The idle detection is a correction offered to the person doing the tracking. It is not a signal sent to somebody else, and there is no percentage attached to it. Nothing about that interval is scored as good or bad; you are simply asked whether to keep it.

So the thing a jiggler suppresses here is a dialog box. That is the honest description of the effect, and it is a much smaller claim than the one the category usually makes.

The Activity Timeline, and why it is not the thing people fear

Toggl’s desktop app has an Activity Timeline that records which applications and windows you used, so you can turn that record into time entries instead of reconstructing your day. It is the feature that sounds most like surveillance in the marketing copy, and it is worth reading the documentation rather than the vibe.

Two details settle it. The timeline records nothing until it is switched on, and it is switched on by the person using the app in their own desktop settings. And what it records is the identity of windows and applications, not how much you moved the mouse inside them.

That second detail is the one that matters for jigglers, and it cuts against the tool rather than for it. Simulated input does not change which window is in front — so an unattended machine with a jiggler running produces a timeline showing one window, unchanged, for hours. If anything, input simulation makes that record look stranger rather than better.

So what does a jiggler change on Toggl Track?

One thing, narrowly: it keeps the machine from reading as idle, so the idle prompt does not appear and a running timer is not interrupted by a question. If you have a workflow where the timer must run across a long stretch of reading, thinking, being on a call from another device, or waiting on a build, that is a real if modest convenience.

What it does not do is inflate a score, because there is no score. It does not populate screenshots, because there are none. It does not change the app timeline, because that records window identity. Anyone telling you that a jiggler makes you look productive in Toggl Track is describing a different product.

The desktop app can stop the timer automatically when you move to a window that matches none of your rules, which is the inverse of the jiggler approach: instead of pretending activity continued, it records that the work changed. There are reminders for forgetting to start a timer, and the idle prompt itself lets you keep the interval rather than discard it, once you decide the thinking time was work.

And there is the plainest tool of all, which people skip because it feels like cheating: editing the entry. A timesheet is a record you are expected to correct — a stopwatch is an aid to memory, not a witness. Adding forty minutes you genuinely spent on a call from your phone is the intended workflow, not a workaround for it. That is the difference between this tool and a monitoring one, and it is worth using rather than routing around.

That is precisely the outcome the idle prompt exists to prevent, which is worth sitting with: suppressing the prompt removes the safety net that keeps your own timesheet honest. On a monitoring tool the incentives run one way; on a billing tool they can run the other.

The other common situation is a stack rather than a single tool: Toggl Track for hours, and something else entirely for monitoring. If that is your setup, the questions worth asking are about the second tool, not this one.

Editing is the designed workflow of a timesheet, not a way around it. The tool is an aid to memory, and correcting an entry to match the work you actually did is the point. The question that matters is whether the corrected hours are accurate, and no software can answer that one for you.

Should I use a mouse jiggler with Toggl Track?

On Toggl Track alone, probably not: the only effect is that an idle prompt does not appear, and that prompt is the step keeping your own timesheet honest before it becomes an invoice.
